Buying a Used Camper Shells

You cannot blame the dealer for wanting to sell you a new one, but you can save a lot of money by looking at cx series truck cap. Shells or canopies were originally developed for sportsmen as a camping accessory. Hunting guides and professional woodsmen found that it was simple to drive their pick up truck into the wilderness and sleep under the cap rather than taking the time to set up a big wall tent and everything that their clients needed. Of course, the shell also kept all of their camp stuff dry and secure if they were driving to a spot to set up camp for a client's party.

ARE Camper shells are incredibly useful and versatile truck accessories. One of the biggest problems with a pick up is that big open bed. Of course, that is what a pick up is for, so that you can haul a lot of stuff which can be loaded and unloaded quickly. However, all that stuff is exposed to the weather, not to mention sticky fingers if it is left unattended in the parking lot. Putting a shell over the bed solves those problems. If you do not need the canopy or it is in the way of a particular job, it is easy enough to take off.
This ease of on and off is part of the reason that there are so many used truck campers on the market. There are truck owners who find they don't used the shell that much, so it is better to sell it than to have it taking up room in the yard. Sometimes it is simply a matter of the truck owner wanting a newer and nicer shell for his truck.
The best reason to buy a new shell, besides the fact that newer is nicer, is that the canopy can be ordered to fit and match the truck perfectly. I hadn't realized this the very first time I bought a brand new pick up. I told the shell dealer that I didn't care about color because he didn't have a red one on the lot to match my truck. However, I was very happy that he talked me into waiting the extra two days because the color of the truck and canopy matched perfectly and looked great!
The reason you are looking for a used camper shell is to save money, and to be honest, if it had not been a brand new truck I would not have cared. Used camper shells work just as good as a new one, so if you can save some money, go for it. However, it is worth the trouble to find a shell that was on the same model truck as yours. The used camper shell market is big enough that it should not be a problem if your pick up is less than 15 years old. The reason for this is aerodynamics. A used camper shell that matches the contours of your truck will give you better gas mileage.

  5. My dad has expressed a desire to have a camper shell put on his truck so that he can take the grandkids camping and adventuring. What are some key things to remember when I am searching for the right camper shell? Are all camper shells the same as far as size from the perspective of length and width?

  6. I'm trying to find truck shells in Salt Lake City. I drive a Chevrolet and it would be convenient if I could find a good shell to keep out the rain. Does anyone currently drive with one? How does it effect the vehicle on the road?

  8. Thanks for the advice on truck shells. When you mentioned them as being "camper shells" it made me think of how awesome it would be to camp in the back of a truck. I could throw a twin mattress in the bed, put the shell on and have an easy home away from home.
